Roberto Mendoza was a hard working devoted man who lived with strong personal convictions. He always did what he enjoyed and stayed true to himself with no regrets. He worked diligently all his life towards the goal of providing a great life for his family. He will be sadly missed by many.
Roberto was born on June 18th, 1944 at the Philippine General Hospital in Manila Philippines. He was the son of Jose and Lenor, brother of Reynaldo and Jose jr.
He attended Burgos Elementary School, and then attended the University of Santo Thomas. A brilliant honor student, he graduated high school at the young age of 14 and college at the age of 19, with a double major in electrical and electronic engineering.
With his ambitious spirit and yearning for a better life, he traveled to America in 1967 and settled in the Bronx, New York. His extraordinary skills in math and engineering landed him a job with a company called Cystoscope, where one of his great achievements was helping design the machine that produces fiber optics.
As a handsome and stylish man in his early 20's he loved to have fun, go to parties and socialize. On one of those fateful nights he met Hilda Burton, the love of his life and wife of 42 years. It was love at first sight, and the couple stayed up talking through the night. They married soon after on August 12th, 1969 and had twin girls in April of 1971. Roberto worked several jobs to support his family but somehow always found a way to spend quality time with them.
Roberto was an entrepreneurial man who was great with numbers. He always had new and interesting ideas for business ventures and dabbled in quite a few. In his spare time he found much enjoyment going to the race track and play the horses. You could find him there every weekend.
His love for the thrill of gambling led him to move to his favorite place in the world, Las Vegas, Nevada. It was the perfect place for him to retire at the age of 56. Everything that made him happy could be found there. He lived happily there for 10 years, spending time cooking, gardening, decorating the house, and entertaining friends and family. He also enjoyed spending lots of time in the casino where he had many friends.
Roberto was diagnosed with colon cancer in 2007. He bravely battled this disease till the bitter end, refusing to let it affect his everyday life. We will honor the memory of Roberto Mendoza in a special place in our hearts. Rest in Peace
