Born on January 17, 1944, in Saint Joseph, Louisiana, Rosie was the second eldest of nine children born to the late Atlanta and Tillman Owens. She was preceded in death by her siblings Robert Owens, Gloria Knox, Atlanta Wines, Tillman Owens Jr., Wealtha Jones, and Margaret Owens. She leaves behind her cherished siblings Wilma Owens and William Owens of Las Vegas, along with her brother-in-law, Antone Smith.
Rosie moved to Las Vegas in the early 1960s, where she began a long and dedicated career in the casino industry, starting as a cashier at the Silver Slipper. She later went on to work many fulfilling years at the Aladdin Hotel and later retired from the Luxor Casino in the early 2000s. In addition, she also pursued her entrepreneurial spirit by opening a beauty supply store in the 1990’s.
She was preceded in death by her husband David, daughter Glenda “Faye” Owens, and son David “Darnell” Smith.
Rosie leaves behind two daughters, Phyllis Nixon (Lawrence) and Michele Smith; three stepchildren, Renee Smith, Winston Smith, and Denise Cooper; loving grandchildren and a great-grandchild; a host of nieces, nephews, and lifelong friends who will cherish her memory.
Rosie was a long-standing member of Pilgram Rest Baptist Church, where her faith was a guiding light throughout her life. In her quiet moments, she loved reading her Bible, crocheting, and sewing. Her home was often filled with the sounds of blues music, laughter, and the comforting aroma of her famous baking—her cakes, banana pudding, and peach cobbler were known and loved far and wide.
Rosie Smith’s warmth, strength, and unwavering love will be deeply missed but never forgotten. Her legacy lives on in the hearts of all who knew her.
