Hey Babe, it has only been a few months since the Lord took you home. It seems like yesterday and 100 years all at the same time.  We are still telling stories about you old and some newer. I miss you, you old fart, and yet am glad you are in a much better place. You are not scared anymore. I am grateful for our time together, but sorry it was cut short. I love and miss you very much. Being the youngest of 3 brothers and a sister, I was fortunate to be able to learn from all of them, but Russ was the most influential.  Russ was 6 years my senior so I naturally looked up to him when I was growing up. He embraced the 60's and the new trends and music, introducing me to a lot of the new ideas as well. I followed his footsteps, buying his '62 VW bus, and journeyed across the US, similar to his journeys after High School. I went to Mankato State from his recommendations. I even had an outdoor wedding, inspired from his own wedding. To say he had a large influence on me is an understatement. His stories of Alaska, the hunting and fishing and exploring that he did, helped to tailor my own adventures.  Russ's stories, our family reunions, fishing trips, green chili stew, late night campfires, and immense starry skies that we shared will be sorely missed. The several great Idaho and Utah hunting trips with all of the Harvey boys left some deep memories.  I hope he is on the top of a sunny mountain right now, looking down at his favorite trout lake, smiling at it all.  I love you brother, rest in peace.

Ill never forget the nights sitting around the table playing yahtzee or you taking me to go ice fishing for the first time. You were a great man and I appreciate everything that you did for me. It was always a good time visiting you and I will miss you very much I love you grandpa.

How can I even put it into words of what you meant to me? You were the best grandpa anyone could ask for the most loving, caring guy in the world. You always took the time to just listen to us whenever we had anything to say joke around when we were sad to make us feel better. We couldnt wait for you to get home from work so we could unlace your work boots and hear about how your day was. You sure made the best pickled peppers that would make your mouth burn and always shared them with me, jars and jars of them.  How am I supposed to say in such short words what you will always mean to me? Im going to miss when you would stick your finger in my ear or flick my ponytail jokingly because you are and always will be my silly grandpa. I love you so much grandpa you truly were the best grandpa in the world. You have taught me so much and shown me what a true gentleman should be. You have given me advice and words of wisdom that I will always remember, I will always have you in my heart I miss you so much forever and always.

Dear Pop
I have not been able to get the words together to even begin to say how much of an amazing man you were. Not only have you tought myself  and my children many things but the one you pushed the most was respect and hard work. I have made it a point to teach my children your work ethic and passion for the things they do in this life.  This old world  lost a great one when you were sadly called home. I know i will miss your stories your pranks and sense of humor. Mostly I will miss the talks we had and recipe swaping but I must say your chilli verde was and is and always will be my favorite. I could go on about all you have done for me and what you meant to me all night. Just know I love you to the moon and back and will miss you as much and having you as a father is an honor I will forever cherish. Thank you for being there thank you for your love and all the million things you did for me. You will always be with me wherever I go.

Dear Russ,

Your sense of humor and your adventurous spirit will always be what I think of when I remember you. I was so lucky that you were a part of my life. Your strong, guiding influence helped me to choose my path at some critical times, and there are so many ways that you had a huge impact on me. You taught me to be an individual and to think critically, and to not to simply follow along with what everyone else was doing. You showed me that just because something is popular does not mean it is good or right. 

When I was in high school, and I was goofing off too much my grades were sliding, you sat me down and told me that I was wasting an opportunity to learn. You explained that school for me is free. If I wanted to learn in the future I would have to pay for it. You also said that I had to be in school all day every day anyway, and that I should not waste that time. I should get everything I could out of it. That message is one that I took on board and passed onto my kids as well, as I have tried to pass on many things that you gave to me.

I regret the years that I was too far away to visit, and now I will never get the opportunity to make up that time. I will hold you in my heart and my memory always. I will remember your character and your spirit, your love of nature and your love of hard work. I will remember your huevos rancheros and the all day spaghetti. I'll remember camping trips and fishing. I will remember you with love and with gratitude for all you have given me, done for me and simply for who you were.

Years ago, as we were driving down a back country road in Idaho, Russ was in a rarely seen serious mood.  He told me about getting diabetes and that it would probably shorten his life by ten years. But, he challenged his Illness head on with tough determination and controlled it to a great extent with diet and exercise for many years. In spite of his illness he was the first one to the top of the mountains time and again. He inspired us to reach beyond our limits to achieve goals we never thought possible.
