Salina Sau Chuen Yan

(September 27, 1954 - December 20, 2023)

Salina Sau Chuen Yan, a devoted Christian, beloved wife, mother, friend to many, and compassionate nurse, passed away suddenly on December 20, 2023, due to complications stemming from stage 4 lymphoma. She was 69 years old.

Born on September 27, 1954, in China, Salina overcame significant challenges during her upbringing to and was able to become a nurse in Hong Kong. In pursuit of a better life for their young family, she and her husband Matthew made the courageous decision to immigrate to the United States despite facing numerous hurdles including the language barrier. Through her unwavering determination and faith, Salina became a registered nurse in the US, and consistently attributed her success to God’s grace.

Salina's nursing career was marked by her dedication to caring for others in the labor and delivery unit. Patients cherished her warmth and kindness, with some even naming their babies after her. Her generosity extended beyond the hospital walls as she actively participated in church ministries, first at Bergen Christian Testimony Church in Wyckoff, NJ and later at Chinese Baptist Church in Las Vegas, NV.

Salina's unwavering faith was the cornerstone of her life, and her legacy of love and generosity will be cherished by all who had the privilege of knowing her. Despite her demanding work schedule, Salina was very hospitable and would open up her home for Bible studies and other ministry gatherings, creating a welcoming space for the Chinese community to share meals and fellowship. Many remember her as an incredibly welcoming woman and a blessing to their lives.

Salina was also known for her sassy attitude and love for vibrant prints, especially leopard. She possessed a contagious laugh and an infectious smile that brightened the lives of those around her. A talented gardener and exceptional cook, Salina shared her culinary skills generously, always ready to whip up a meal for friends and family.

Salina leaves behind her beloved husband Matthew and two daughters, Grace and Joyce. Facing challenges as an immigrant, she worked tirelessly to support her daughters but always emphasized the importance of faith and happiness over work pursuits.

In her final days, Salina found solace in her faith, passing away peacefully surrounded by her family and friends. One of the last notes she left for her loved ones reads, "I have now reached the end of my life, but my heart is full of peace because I know that I will go to a more beautiful hometown, where there will be no pain, no tears, and the presence of the Lord, which is infinitely better... I hope to see everyone I know again in heaven. I hope that my relatives and friends who have not believed in the Lord can accept the salvation of the Lord Jesus as soon as possible, receive the Lord’s anointing as soon as possible, and have the hope of eternal life."

Her passing is a transition to a joyful, everlasting existence with God. On Earth, Salina's daughters occasionally urged her to say 'no' to certain ministry commitments, concerned about the toll on her health. Yet, she consistently responded that she wanted to give her best for the Lord. Salina took her calling seriously – sharing the gospel and ministering to others, especially those in need. While her physical presence is no longer with us, her legacy lives on. We know that her physical death lets her rest from her labors and her works follow her. “Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord…” (Revelation 14:13). We can find comfort and rejoice in this truth.

A memorial service to celebrate Salina's life will be held on January 27, 2024, at 10 am at Palm Eastern Mortuary & Cemetery (7600 S Eastern Ave, Las Vegas NV 89123).
