Al was born in Norfolk, Virginia, February 4, 1949, to Marshall Jackson Rountree, Sr and Harriet Leonard Lorenser. He grew up in the Virginia Beach area. As a child, he and his dad would spend time camping and fishing together. While he didn’t always like the camping, his love for fishing would eventually lead to him owning his own bait n’ tackle shop later in life.
Shortly after graduating high school, Al enlisted as a soldier in the US Army. It was there he served for over 23 years, serving 2 tours in Vietnam and Desert Storm. Al rose to the rank of Sergeant First Class before becoming a Warrant Officer. In the Army, he met and fell in love with his wife, Gloria, while they were both stationed at Fort Lee, Virginia. They later married in 1988 while stationed at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. He retired as a Chief Warrant Officer 3, as an Engineer Maintenance Technician.
After retirement, Al dedicated much of his time to his family, taking care of Emily during the first year of her life through various health complications. With the birth of his son, Tyler, Al could finally share his love of football with someone. He worked various jobs from insurance sales, phlebotomist, and shipyard management. He enjoyed playing golf, mowing the grass, having a good meal, and the occasional nap or two. At the end of the day, however, there was nothing Al loved more than spending time with his family and furry friends.
Al is survived by his wife of 37 years, Gloria Atkinson, his daughter, Emily Rogers, son-in-law Sean Rogers, son, Tyler Rountree and granddaughters AnnMarie and Charlotte.
Military honors and a Celebration of Life will be scheduled at a later time.
He will be oh so missed!
