David Rudd Hamerly, aged 70, passed away peacefully on February 5, 2024. David was a long-time resident of Austin, Texas. Born on October 20, 1953, he leaves behind a legacy of love, kindness, and cherished memories full of family, world travel, service, and friendship.
He was preceded in death by parents Bobbie W. and Frances (Dean) Hamerly of Nederland, Texas and nephew Stephen Hamerly of Virginia Beach, Virginia.
David graduated Nederland High School in 1972, Lamar University in 1984, and The Defense Information School (DINFOS) in 1988.
Having served in both the Army and Navy, David's commitment to his country reflected his deep sense of duty. He served in the US Navy 1974-1978, and US Army 1986-1991; twice honorably discharged. Service included the Vietnam Era, Cold War Era, the first Gulf War (Op Desert Shield/Storm), and overseas service in Italy, Saudi Arabia, and Iraq with the Southern European Broadcasting (SEB) affiliate of the America Forces Radio and Television Service (AFRTS).
David was a devoted father to his daughter, Becca Glenn, and took great joy in being a grandfather to two boys, Cameron (16) and Austin (14). Other survivors include his son in law David Glenn; brothers Michael and wife Carol Sue (Gardenshire) Hamerly of Suffolk, Virginia; Don and wife Terry (Haddox) Hamerly of Oak Park, Illinois, and sister Sandi (Hamerly) Iverson and husband Terry of Winnsboro, Texas, a niece and numerous nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephew, and great-grand nephews.
Special appreciation is shown to family members both immediate and extended, and to dear friends Bobby Duncan and Pamela O’Neil, for their enduring support, strength, love, prayers and compassion.
A celebration of David's life will be held on Saturday, March 2nd from 11am until 12:30pm at Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home in Leander, Texas. Friends and family are welcome to come together to share stories, offer support, and remember the remarkable man who touched so many lives.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to the International Network for Aid, Relief and Assistance (INARA, www.inara.org] or Reel Recovery (reelrecovery.org) in David's honor.
