Born in Ontario, Darlene grew up in Sylvan Lake, Alberta, alongside her three younger siblings. As the eldest daughter of the late Evalynne “Lynne” Mills, Darlene shared a special bond with her family and treasured the memories, stories, and laughter they created together.
For 35 years, Darlene shared her life with her partner, Calvin “Cal”. Together, they built a life filled with love and friendship.
Above all else, Darlene loved her family. She was the very best big sister to Darrin (Katherine), Andrea (Daniel), and Corinna (David); sister-in-law to Pam and Darin; and much-loved niece to Gloria and Ken. She took particular pride in being the fun-loving auntie to: Logan (Paige), Hayden (Erika), Rachel, Lexie, Reyna, Skyla, Shaelynne, Tyler, Matthew, Meagan and Nicole, and was delighted to become a great auntie to four more little ones.
Over the years, Darlene called Red Deer, Calgary, and Kelowna home, spending ten memorable years with Cal in the beautiful Okanagan, a place she held especially close to her heart.
Darlene had a wonderful way of staying connected to everyone she loved no matter the distance. Whether visiting family at Seba Beach, travelling to Ontario, or enjoying a good old-fashioned "chatty chat" on the phone, she always wanted to know what was happening in everyone's lives. She celebrated their milestones, shared their stories, and made sure they knew she cared.
For the past 25 years, Darlene was a much-loved face at Calmar Fas Gas, now Chevron. She was more than a dedicated employee; she was part of the heart of the store. With genuine kindness, curiosity, and a wonderful sense of humour, she welcomed coworkers, regular customers, and travellers alike. She was always ready for a conversation or a laugh and took particular pride in mentoring young people entering the workforce.
Darlene loved watching sports, keeping up with her favourite shows, and relaxing in her backyard. She was always up for a good laugh, a little party, and a chance to reminisce about the good times. She had a playful spirit, a wonderful sense of humour, and a gift for making people feel comfortable and welcome. Family gatherings were always a little more entertaining when Darlene was there, especially when the stories started flowing and the laughter followed.
Darlene will be remembered for her generous heart, her strong work ethic, her curiosity for others, and the joy she found in life's simple pleasures. She was someone who showed her love by showing up, staying connected, sharing a laugh, and being there when it mattered.
Although our hearts are broken, we are grateful for the many wonderful memories, the stories we will continue to tell, and the laughter that will always remind us of her.
Darlene, you were our big sister, our fun Auntie, our friend, and one of a kind. We will miss your laughter, your stories, your phone calls, and your beautiful ability to make every gathering a little more fun.
A Private Celebration of Life will take place on November 7, 2026 – please contact the family for gathering details.
We love you, Dar. Until we meet again, keep the party going.
