Cherished mother, sister, aunt, and grandmother, Nadine Hazel Quist, died in Leduc, Alberta on 24 March 2024 at the age of 76 after a long illness. Born in Brooks, Alberta to Grant Stevenson and Alice (Shipman) Stevenson, she spent her early childhood on the family farm near Rainier. Farm life was eventually cut short as their land suffered from drought and hailstorms, pushing Grant to reinvent himself as a forestry service technician and relocate the family to Calgary where Nadine grew into a beautiful and accomplished young woman. She earned a Bachelor of Education degree from the University of Calgary during which she enjoyed a treasured opportunity to study at Oxford University in England. During her university years, she met the love of her life, Bryan Quist, whom she would marry in the Cardston, Alberta temple on his return from his mission to Scotland for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. After teaching elementary school for a couple of years, Nadine turned her attention to having children of her own, four sons and two daughters. Leaving Calgary in 1982, Bryan and Nadine raised their family in Magrath. Even through these years of busy family life, Nadine continued to study piano, learned to paint, mastered cooking and baking, sewed, and made handcrafted toys that have become heirlooms. She enjoyed dancing to the Beatles, Simon and Garfunkel, and ABBA, reading Victorian novels, and teaching and caring for her children. She was a devoted Latter-day Saint who loved the restored gospel of Jesus Christ. As her children grew, she took great joy in their accomplishments, and in the spouses, the 17 grandchildren, and 1 great-grandchild they added to her family. Though her marriage to Bryan ended in divorce after 32 years, and he died of complications from diabetes 2 years later, she came to forgive him and hoped for a future with him in the next life. Upon retirement, Nadine joined her grown children in Edmonton. Shortly thereafter, she was diagnosed with Lewy Body Dementia and Parkinson's Disease. Her children, particularly her daughters, were honored to care for her. Though a resident in a care centre for the final years of her life, Nadine was in the company of her children to her final day. Unassuming and gentle, Nadine described her love for her family as "fierce." She is greatly missed, and it is with bittersweetness that we mark her escape from the prison of her long illness and her passage to a better place. Her name means "hope" and she died firm in the hope of Jesus Christ. It was Palm Sunday. Until we meet again, Nadine.
Nadine is survived by her sisters Laraine (Jim) Shields and Janice (Paul) Kennett; her daughters Alison Quist (Alan Levesque) and Stephanie (Christopher) Van Orman; her sons Anders (Jennifer) Quist, Dugald Quist, Rawdon Quist, and Hughbart (Rebecca) Quist; 17 grandchildren, and 1 great-grandchild.
Funeral services will be held at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 80 Michigan Street South
Devon, AB T9G 1R8 on the 20th of April, 2024 at 11:30 am. Interment will be at the Mountain View Cemetery, 1605 100 St SE, Calgary, AB T2P 2G7, Canada on the 27th of April at 12:00 pm.
