Orest was born and raised on the family farm west of Calmar, the son of Max and Eva Fitzowich.
Orest devoted his life to teaching, farming, community, church, family, friends, and his Ukrainian heritage. He taught for more than 30 years at Calmar School, where he became a mentor and friend to generations of students. He was known for his tough exterior, warm heart, and constant encouragement, inspiring people to recognize their strengths, believe in themselves, and always strive to do their best.
He gave countless hours to the Calmar community through his involvement in sports, fundraising, and his involvement with his Ukrainian Orthodox Church and various Ukrainian organizations.
Orest loved sports, especially the Edmonton Oilers, Edmonton Elks football, curling, and the Toronto Blue Jays. He had a deep appreciation for history and travel and greatly enjoyed his coffee groups and games of crib. Above all, he treasured the time he spent with his many lifelong friends.
His memory will be forever cherished by his sister, Gloria (Larry), extended family members, lifelong friends, former staff and students, church family, colleagues, and the many people whose lives he touched. His dedication to others, his love of community, and the encouragement he gave so freely will remain a lasting part of his legacy.
Orest was predeceased by his sisters, Sylvia and Nadia and his parents, Eva and Max.
A Prayer Service will be held from 7- 9 PM, on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, in The Royal Canadian Legion Calmar # 266 - 4815 47 St, Calmar, AB.
