Our beloved husband, father, Opa, son and brother, Rudy, lost his hard-fought battle with cancer on March 17, 2021. Rudy is survived by his loving wife of nearly 49 years, Rosemarie; his daughters Heidi (Duane), Kirsten (Fabrizio) and Tanya (Marty) and his five grandchildren (Gaby, Bentley, Emma, Jeremy and Michaela); his mother Helga; and his siblings Eric (Jeanne) and Monika (David); along with numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends. Rudy also leaves to mourn his extended family in Germany, including Doris (Peter), Edwin (Katrin) and Ulla and their families.
Rudy was born in Barwedel, Germany on April 22, 1945 where he spent his childhood before immigrating to Edmonton with his mother, grandmother and siblings in 1958. Rudy completed his schooling at the University of Alberta with science and pharmacy degrees, graduating in 1973. He met his beloved Rosemarie on Good Friday 1971 and they were married May 26, 1972. Rudy’s childhood dream of owning a small-town business came to fruition when he and Rosemarie established Calmar Pharmacy Ltd. in 1977. They raised their three daughters in the Edmonton area while creating a lifelong legacy that their children are now carrying on.
Rudy loved being active and enjoyed participating in a variety of sports. He and Rosemarie were known for entertaining. You could always find Rudy at the BBQ with a beer in hand, smile on his face and a yard full of friends. Later in life, he and Rosemarie traveled extensively and spent hours together on the golf course. His greatest joy in recent years was spending time with his five grandchildren, whom he loved dearly.
His family would like to thank Dr. Grant Davies and the homecare nursing team, who made it possible for Rudy to live out his days in his home surrounded by loved ones. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the University of Alberta Hospital Foundation.
