Viva was born Emily Viva Grant in Emo, Ontario, on September 20, 1925. She moved to Leduc in 1939 after the passing away of her father. She married Leonard George Welch in 1951, moving to Edmonton and then to Calgary. She married Dennis Murray Cummings in 1976 and remained together until his passing in 1982. She never remarried again. After her eyesight began failing, she returned to Leduc in 1997 to be with her many friends from her childhood. She remained active, floor curling and bowling until a few months before she was diagnosed with cancer. Her health declined rapidly and she passed away peacefully in her sleep.
Viva is survived by her son, John Rhodes (Christine) Welch and daughter Joanne Ruth Welch, and her half sister Marvel (Eugene) Bullied, and her grandchildren, Nichol (Patrick) Welch and Stephen (Neil) Welch. She is also survived by her nieces and nephews, Deborah (Al) Arbothnot, Robert Grant, Tom (Laurel) Grant, and Carol (Bill) McLean, and her cousin, Lyla (Dallas) Van Dresar, and too many nieces, nephews and cousins to mention.
She is predeceased by her father, Cecil Rhodes Grant, and by her mother Mary Aileen Judson (nee Spicer) and stepfather, Henry James Judson. She was also pre-deceased by her brother Arlo Betrum (Bud) Grant, her sister Lyla Lorainne and her husband Joseph Hodge, and one nephew, Kenton Rex Grant.
