

James Onsby Whitfield “Tac”, at age 81 of Leeds, Alabama, passed away on Monday, August 26, 2024 at his home. Tac spent his lifetime in Leeds, Alabama. He loved Leeds and its people. He graduated from Leeds High School in 1960 then he studied Business at Mississippi State University for 3 years. He spent 28 years working for GPC – NAPA Company. He owned his own business in Leeds, Leeds Auto Parts. Tac served the city of Leeds at its mayor for 3 terms (12 years). Tac was a Master Mason in the Leeds Masonic Lodge 446. He had just received his 50-year pin. His father, O. F. Whitfield, was a Master Mason and his son, James C. Whitfield is a Master Mason. Tac was very active in Boy Scouts of America serving as a leader from 1980 until 1989 where his son is an Eagle Scout. He sponsored and coached Leeds Little League football and baseball. He was always interested and supported Leeds City Schools. He was a member of First Baptist Church Leeds. Tac was a very good golfer and loved golf. Tac is survived by his wife of 61 years, Chris Whitfield; son, James C. Whitfield; grandson, Will Whitfield and Andrew Whitfield; sister, Kathy Cunningham (Howard); nephews, Chad Pearson and Heath Cunningham; niece, Heather Kerns; nephews, Jeff Bethune and Alan Bethune (Debbie); niece, Jaimie Fredericks (Johnnie). Services for Tac will be on Sunday, September 1, 2024 at First Baptist Church Leeds, 7481 Parkway Drive Leeds, Alabama 35094. The visitation will be from 1:00 PM until 2:00 PM. The funeral service will begin at 2:00 PM with burial to follow at Cedar Grove Cemetery in Leeds, Alabama. Kilgroe Funeral Home, Leeds, Alabama directing.
