Jeffrey Michael Lyles, age 68, of Vestavia, Alabama but long time resident of Odenville, Alabama passed away on August 23, 2024. He graduated from St. Clair County High School in 1973 and followed their sports program year after year. He received his Associates Degree from Faulkner University.
He is preceded in death by his father, Charles Lyles and his uncle, Steve Mize. Jeff is survived by his wife of 38 years, Darlene Riddle Lyles, daughters Christina Langston (Josh Parris), Libby Smith (James); grandchildren Tyler Langston, Charles Jeffrey Smith, Mara Joy Smith, Priscilla Smith; great grandchildren Grayson and Ellison; mother Mary Lyles and brother Greg Lyles (Dianne) and a host of nieces and nephews.
Jeff was called to preach around the age of 16 but didn't fully surrender to that calling until a few years later. He had an outstanding career as a Corrections Officer and had earned the title of Sergeant before fully surrendering to God's call into the ministry. He loved to share the love of Jesus and served as an Elder in the Methodist church, serving as lead Pastor to approximately nine churches across north Alabama. He answered God’s call to return to St. Clair Correctional Facility as their Chaplain, where he was quite beloved until his retirement. He helped facilitate the Fatherhood Initiative at St.Clair and also served two years as a volunteer chaplain for the Birmingham police department. Jeff has touched many lives, countless families, the best of these and the least of these. He did not believe that anyone was out of Jesus’ reach. He was passionate about inspiring fathers to step up to lead their children and families. He was someone who mastered the art of a light-hearted serious tone. He was firm on where he stood, but could always comfort you with truth and humor. His grandchildren would say Pawpaw had a song for everything! He loved football and baseball - with no real "favorites" - he just loved the game. He proudly was able to facilitate as umpire for many little league, high school and a few college baseball games all across Alabama.
The family will be receiving friends Sunday, August 25, from 6 to 7:30 PM at Kilgroe Funeral Home. A celebration of life will be held at Kilgroe Funeral Home Monday, August 26, at 1:00 PM. Burial will be at Low Gap Methodist Cemetery immediately following the service.
