

Kay Sanders Chasteen of Leeds, Alabama, a beloved wife, mother, "Gon," and dedicated educator, passed away peacefully on Friday, May 30, 2025, at the age of 72. She was born on September 9, 1952, in Alexander City, Alabama, to the late Dorace and Katherine Sanders. Kay was a cherished presence in her community, known for her loving and supportive nature. She dedicated many years to teaching, shaping young minds as a 7th-grade English teacher at Leeds Junior High and Middle School. Outside of the classroom, Kay found immense joy in life's simple pleasures. She treasured time spent with her grandchildren, making memories at the lake and beach, and trying her luck at the casino. A passionate sports fan, she could always be found rooting for her favorite teams: the Leeds Greenwave, the Alabama Crimson Tide, and the Atlanta Braves. She was a dedicated member of First Baptist Church in Leeds. She was a devoted wife to her husband of 52 years, James Chasteen. Together, they built a life filled with love and mutual support. Kay’s greatest joy came from her family, and she poured her heart into being a loving mother to her sons, Keith Chasteen (Maegan), and Kurt Chasteen (Laysea). She adored her grandchildren, Ty and Riley Chasteen, and held the memory of her late grandson, Bradley Chasteen, close to her heart. Kay is also survived by her brother, Scott Sanders, (Shannon), and their children, Mary Kate and Alaina. Kay's giving spirit and unwavering support will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
A visitation will be held on Tuesday, June 3, 2025, from 11:0 AM until 1:00 PM at Kilgroe Funeral Home in Leeds with the funeral service beginning at 1:00 PM. The burial will follow at Forest Crest Cemetery in Irondale, Alabama.The family will receive flowers or donations can be made in Kay’s memory to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, an organization close to her heart.
