
Douglas H. Thompson 85, a 26 year resident of Lehigh Acres, died February 14, 2012 after a long illness. He was born on October 19, 1926 in Boston, MA. A World War II Veteran, He served in the Phillipine Islands with the US Army. He was a member of American Legion Post # 323 in Lehigh Acres. He was a Past Commander of VFW Post 6804 Barrington, NH and a member of Post 4176 in Lehigh Acres.
He was a member of the Chamber of Commerce for many years as the representative of Lehigh Landowners Inc., then as a published author. He wrote and published three novels: Curse of Dark Island; Satan's Heritage; and Murder on the Zephur.
His passion was playing golf, and he was the tournament director for many years at the Admiral Lehigh/Mirror Lakes Men's Golf Association.
He was an active member of the First Congregational Church where he serves as Trustee/Elder.
Doug retired as the owner of Barrington Paint and Hardware Store, affiliated with Ace Hardware. Prior to that he served in management at W.T. Grant Department Stores in the New England area, receiving many awards as an outstanding manager.
He was predeceased by his parents Herschel C. and Grace Caroline (Norton) Thompson, his wife of 27 years Florence June (Bagnell), and a daughter Tammy May Menier.
He is survived by his loving wife of 33 years Ada May (Young) ; 3 daughters: Sarah (Bagnell)and Joe Marzalek of Rock y Hill, CT, Deborah Diane (Spratt) Thompson of Brookline, NH, Doreen Donna and Richard Barron of South Nattick, MA; 5 step-children Miland R. Young of Dumfries, VA, Kathleen A. and David Castle of Nottingham, NH, Donna M. and David Gorski of Exeter, NH, Scott L. and Melanie Young of Strafford, NH, and Randolph H. and Jayne Young of Strafford, NH. Seventeen grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.
The family would like to express appreciation and thanks for the care Doug received at the Lehigh Regional Medical Center and the Lehigh Acres Rehabilitation Center over the past 15 months.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the First Community Congregational Church 200 Leeland Heights Blvd. Lehigh Acres, FL.
A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday Feb 25 at 1pm at the Church.
