She was a sweet lady. I remember she and I had lunch together years ago at Marie Calendars. She took such good care of her husband all those years. 


Condolences to the Sanchez and Ortega families. It saddens me to say goodbye to my last remaining Aunt on the Sanchez side. She was such a kind and loving person and I have many fond memories of our families visits through the years.  I am so glad my Father, Julio, encouraged his brother Bill to dance with her that fatefull day.  They found the love of their lives and we got a beauliful Aunt. not a bad deal. I hope you find comfort in your memories, of the times you shared with her. Although I regreat not being there physically at the servces, I was able to attend virtualy. My condolences to you all. Alice and I worked at Memorial Middle School in the 1990’s. Several of her former colleagues found out today. We send you all our love and I know Alice is now with her husband❤️

I taught next door to Alice at Memorial for many years. She loved her students and advocated for them. We would gather in my classroom on Fridays and pretend we were in a jacuzzi at a fancy spa, and share stories of our week. Oh my, the stories and laughter we shared. It was our time to decompress. My son, Jason, had been a student at Memorial before I began teaching there and he remembers her always trying to get him to slow down and not run in the halls. He went on the be a high school and college track athlete and she laughed that maybe she just made him run faster so he could get by her door before she made it out into the hall. She and Bill attended his wedding at our home. They were a model of the commitment and longevity of true love for him and his wife as well as  Mike and me. I truly loved her!

It was my great honor to be dubbed "the other daughter" by Alice and Bill.  We met by chance when I joined 'the loft' at Memorial as a new teacher in 1979.  The ladies of the loft, as we came to be known, were a strong sisterhood both on and off campus.

Alice was a born teacher.   Even though she came to the profession later in life, it was better because life experiences as a mother and a Navy wife added to her knowledge.  Students used to swear she had eyes in the back of her head.  She never backed away from making a home visit if that was needed.  

Teaching at Memorial back in those days was a lot like drawing combat duty, and it was very comforting to know that Alice was no more than two doors away from me.  I know I wouldn't have made it some years without her patient listening to me and her suggestions.

Because of Alice, I came to love Tony Hillerman novels and learn about the Navajo Indian culture.  Every time I read one (now written by his daughter Anne), I think of her.

I know Alice and Bill are catching up on all the news and  she can again hear him say, "I love you, Alice."  Have fun dancing with Bill, Alice.

My great-aunt Alice was full of genuine kindness and wisdom. Her calm demeanor was a good influence on everyone who would visit with her. She was friendly, pragmatic, realistic and curious. Her tremendous love for my great-uncle Bill was inspiring. She was a talented story teller and I will miss her stories of past times which connected me to my grandparents, Ed and Esther Sanchez. The fact that she would include them in her stories to me showed what a caring and thoughtful person she was. 

I was saddened to learn of the loss of Aunt Alice.  She made a difference in so many lives.  I have many fond memories of the trips we took to San Diego from Albuquerque to visit Aunt Alice and Uncle Bill when I was a child.  I also remember hearing stories of the vacations Aunt Alice and Uncle Bill took with my Mom and Dad.   They had a lot of fun together.  Aunt Alice was friendly and kind and I am thankful to have been her niece.

My sincere condolences to the Sanchez and Ortega families. Alice was a very special lady and I will miss her. She was so kind and warm. I will especially remember her sitting in her favorite recliner and telling me stories of her long and interesting life, her childhood in New Mexico, and her travels living with her Navy husband in Louisiana, New York, and Japan. She would often tell me what a wonderful, handsome husband that she had, and how much she missed him. A voracious reader, she seemed always have a book in her hand or one nearby. The animals loved her and she was constantly talking to her pets. Although the last years were painful, she rarely complained. Always thinking of others rather than herself, she was so proud of her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. May you rest in peace, wonderful Alice.
