

In addition to her parents, Berchie was preceded in death by her beloved husband Balmer Atwood; her brothers Gene, Buddy, Carl, Fred, Earl Dean, and Herman Combs; her sisters Irene Combs, Grace Johnson, Carol Ann "Dodie" Brewer, and Mildred Brooks; and grandson Brandon Atwood.
Left to cherish Berchie's memory are her sons Tony Atwood (wife Phyllis) and Craig Atwood (wife Donna); her daughters Debbie Poarch (husband Jeff) and Tonia Rainey (husband Jim); her brother Dale Combs; her sister Mary Brown; grandchildren Hannah Harris, Misty Cook, Sarah Atwood, Ethan Atwood, Jennifer Flynn, Christy Baird, Rebekah Contreras, and Leah Rainey; several great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Berchie devoted her life to her faith and her church, Spirit And Life Assembly. She lived to serve others and constantly cared for her family, strangers, and everyone she encountered. She will be remembered for her love of Jesus and the love she gave. Berchie's love and legacy will never be forgotten.
The family will receive friends from 5:00 PM until 6:00 PM on Thursday, May 21, 2026, at Pendry's Lenoir Funeral Home, 522 Wilkesboro Blvd., Lenoir, NC 28645.
The funeral service will be held at 6:00 PM on Thursday, May 21, 2026 in the chapel at Pendry's Lenoir Funeral Home, officiated by Pastor Bob Roark. Burial will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Park.
