Jay was born in Caldwell County to Conley and Faye Spears Bentley on December 12, 1937.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Vance Allen Bentley, a daughter Kimberly Bentley and five brothers, Stanley, Collis, Fred, Kenneth and Clyde.
Jay was a member of Tabernacle Advent Christian Church where he served in various capacities including the Board of Trustees and the Board of Deacons. Anytime he saw a need he tried to see that the need was met. He quickly became a friend to all he met because of his concern and compassion for all. He worked in the roofing business and eventually owned his own roofing company. He had a love for the outdoors and enjoyed hunting and fishing.
He is survived by Linda Smith Bentley, his wife of 53 years, three sons; Michael, Jay Edward and Jonathan two brothers Major and Kelly, four sisters; Susie, Gail, Irene and Lorene, five grandchildren, a step grandchild and two great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held on Monday, March 22, 2021 at 1:00 pm at Tabernacle Advent Christian Church Cemetery with Rev. Bob Copeland officiating.
Men of the church will serve as pallbearers.
