Janice Raye (Bowers) Wells, 78 of Levelland, passed away on March 13, 2019 in Levelland, Texas. Janice was born on February 8, 1941 in Levelland to Nelda and Rayford Bowers. It was here that she graduated in the top 10% of her class in 1959. On June 6th of that year she married Billy Joe Collins of Lipan, Tx. For a couple of years, they lived abroad in Germany while Billy Joe served in the U.S. Army. They had fun traveling around and exploring the many different countries throughout Europe. Shortly after their return to Levelland, they welcomed their beautiful children, Andrea Jo in 1965, and Shannon Lynn in 1969. Janice attended South Plains College and began a career as a bookkeeper. For many years she worked at American Oil Servicing. She was the pianist for Trinity Baptist where she and her family were also members.
In 1976 Janice married Jerry Wells of Hart Camp, Texas. They were cotton farmers and were active in the American Cotton Growers Association. In 1990, Janice was elected to the position of Treasurer of Lamb County in Littlefield, Texas. It was here that she was recognized for her outstanding service to the community for over 24 years.
Spoiling her grandkids, rooting for the Red Raiders, enjoying luncheons with the Class of ‘59, bowling with her dad and friends, and gardening were some of her favorite past times. She loved traveling with her family to Hawaii, Alaska, Canada, Mexico, and Europe. Some of her favorite places to hang out included Colorado, St. Louis, San Francisco, New York, and Disney World. Janice’s kindness and generosity knew no bounds. She was the sweetest, most loving, adored mother, grandmother, mother-in-law, aunt, and friend to each one of us. She truly left an indelible mark on all who knew and loved her.
Janice is preceded in death by her loving parents, Rayford and Nelda Bowers, her sister Sherry Guthrie, and her husband, Jerry Wells. She is survived by her loving daughters and son-in-law, Andrea Zabel of Midland, John Zabel of Arkansas, Shannon and Jesse Jantzen of Chicago along with her precious (yet, goofy) grandchildren: Collin Zabel, of Houston, Brooklyn Vasquez and husband James, of Dallas, Carson Zabel of Abilene, Brennan Jantzen of Austin, and Madelyn Jantzen of Lubbock.
Funeral services for Janice will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 6, 2019, at Second Baptist Church in Levelland with Michael Holster officiating. The family would like to thank Kindred Hospice of Lubbock and all of the love, prayers, and support from her family and friends these past few years. In lieu of flowers, they request that you make a donation to your favorite charity. Services are under the compassionate care of George Price Funeral Home.
