Heaven gained another Angel and he is reunited with his parents Marie and Donald Sr., as well as his brothers Donald Jr., Kenneth A., and Kevin Sr.
Den is survived by his son and best friend, Ken, of Doylestown; his sisters Susan of St. Petersburg, Florida and Donna McCormick-Miller (Jim) of Newtown. He will be truly missed by his sister-in-law Judith McCormick; his nieces Michelle Meehan (Paul), Kristin Miller (Scott), Megan McCormick-Mann (Gerard), and nephews Kevin Jr., Christopher Sr. (Heather), and Sean McCormick, J and Erick Miller; and great nieces Kaylee McCormick, Ellie and Abbey Miller, and Emma Breault; great nephews Kieran, Ryan and Gavin Meehan, and Chris McCormick Jr.
Born and raised in the Lakeside section of Levittown. He spent his early years playing baseball for the Continental Little League and was a standout on several teams that advanced to the District playoffs. Den also excelled at playing ice hockey on the frozen Levittown Lake in the winters and at the Grundy Ice Rink in Bristol.
As a young boy, Pop taught him the skills of fishing and he became a regular at the Levittown Lake especially on opening day of trout fishing season. If he wasn’t fishing, he would be adventurous and would climb trees or play Tarzan swinging from the trees. Den suffered many injuries including broken arms and stitches when he missed the next branch or landed in the water. The tight-knit group of friends from the Lakeside section would always make sure he made it home or they ran through the yards to 21 Locust Lane to get his parents.
Den attended Pennsbury High School where he was a member of the Cross Country team which garnered many awards. He was a graduate of the Pennsbury High School class of 1973. Den continued his education and graduated from West Chester University.
Den found a niche in the food service industry as a chef, kitchen manager and front of house manager at several popular restaurants. His first work experience was working at everybody’s favorite theme park Sesame Place. He went on to work at Dick Clark’s American Bandstand and Chickie’s & Pete’s. Den moved on to become a mainstay at the Irish Rover Station House in Langhorne for over 15 years where he enjoyed the camaraderie of his fellow co-workers. He showcased his creative flair in the kitchen and when not in the kitchen, he had a cordial and welcoming rapport with the regulars and he knew their favorite dishes and how they liked them prepared.
Den was a devoted father and his son Ken was his “pride and joy.” He was Ken’s biggest fan and attended every sporting event. Den was part of the parents contingent of supporters that faithfully supported the Pennsbury Ice Hockey team. The times at the York Ice Hockey Tournament and a trip to Lake Placid created lasting memories for Den and Ken. As the seasons changed, Den’s support of Ken switched to baseball and he supported Ken while he played on the Yardley-Morrisville baseball team and the Pennsbury High School baseball team. When Ken went off to college and joined the Philadelphia University Baseball team, Den attended as many games as possible and especially enjoyed Saturday double-headers.
Den was a loyal and hard core Philly sports teams fan especially the Phillies, Flyers, & Eagles and was an avid Penn State Nittany Lion fan. Somewhere in his young childhood he also developed a love of the Boston Red Sox and we are not sure how he didn’t get tossed out of the family home when our Dad found out. Den’s love of hockey drew him to sharing Flyer season tickets with a longtime friend for approximately 30 years.
As far as sports, Den played Rugby and while small in stature he was fast. As Rugby is a rough sport it wasn’t surprising that numerous broken noses and sprained ankles were suffered. But Rugby players always knew a little ice and cold beer at their post game parties would help. Den also loved to golf with some of his high school buddies over the years.
Den’s favorite travel adventures with family included trips to Long Beach Island, trips to see Kenny Chesney concerts in various cities and trips to cheer on the Nittany Lions in Happy Valley. His favorite place to relax was on the beach sitting in his beach chair or relaxing “out back” listening to country music. His love of music was unmatched.
Den never missed checking in with his Mom and was a great son. We are not sure who enjoyed the holidays more, him or “Gram” - especially St. Patrick’s Day!
Den had a kind heart and will be forever in the hearts of all those who knew and loved him. He will truly be missed by all.
One of the best ways to honor or remember Den is to share a laugh or simply recall a fond memory you may have shared.
