Born in Bristol, PA, she was a lifelong Levittown resident. She was employed as a secretary for Kaiser Metal Products, and later at Pomeroy's Department Store. She later was a caregiver for members of her family.
During her high school years, she met the love of her life, Willis Gillespie, while hanging with friends. The two were married in 1952 while Willis was serving in the US Navy. Doris patiently waited for his return from the Korean War and they started their life together.
Doris kept herself in shape by being an avid walker, walking three miles a day for many years with her group of "Kenwood Walkers". She loved baking, especially her Christmas cookies, that were sought by all. She was an avid Philly sports fan, especially the Eagles and Phillies. She never missed a Johnny Mathis concert. Excursions to Boscov's Department Store was the highlight of her day.
Above all, she loved taking care of her family. She was the epitome of a Mom, known throughout the neighborhood as a mother and friend to all.
Her motherly instincts continued when she was blessed with grandchildren. Doris spent countless hours with them, teaching them how to swim and having endless summer fun.
Every holiday was special to her and Willis; they took pride in entertaining everyone no matter what holiday it was.
Doris had a heart of gold; she never had a mean word for anybody. She was an angel on Earth. She will be missed by all whose lives she touched.
Predeceased by her loving husband of 59 years, Willis Gillespie; her children, Denise and Diane; Doris is survived by her adoring daughter, Cheryl Danese; and her grandchildren, Samantha Danese (Christopher Norat), and Dylan Danese (Kylie Jordan); and her sister, Lorraine Bowyer; and many nieces and nephews.
