Jhee Hyon, a resident of Fairless Hills, Bucks County for 45 years, since January 1, 1978, was born in 1932 in Taegu, South Korea and passed away at her home at 9 a.m. on Sunday, July 24, 2022. She was the third of seven sisters with two brothers. Jhee often expressed gratitude to inherit the roots of her ancestors: a scholar grandfather, a mayor cousin of Taegu City on her mother's side (Hwa-Won Moon family) and healing practitioners of three generations on her father's side, including one younger brother who was a medical doctor (Kyung-Joo Lee family).
Although Jhee herself did not complete, then 5 years high school, she grew to reflect a love for music and the arts. As a young teen, Jhee had been much inspired and influenced by a cousin who had studied abroad in Paris. Upon his return, the cousin taught Jhee and her older sister, Jsook, the way of Western dance. At that time, she also became a devoted visitor at a local music hall, where classical music played with a commentator in the background. As a young adult of 21, Jhee was the first of her sisters who sought to work outside the household, at a time when almost 90% of her Korean female peers did not leave the home. Eventually, Jhee worked on a U.S. military base where she met her future husband, AG, who was a number of years younger. The youngest sister, Grace who pursued to work in an American bank in the same military base where AG and Jhee worked, and came to the USA by Jhee and AG's invitation as a permanent resident with her families many years after Jhee who came to the USA in 1969 by AG's invitation for a permanent residency.
Jae's ancestral roots and artistic devotions are reflected in her subsequent family life in the US. She was a proud spouse of Professor AG, where at annual banquets and alumni gatherings, she was often the most sought out dance partner on the dance floor, after the first dance with her husband.
As a classical music devotee, she ensured that her children all learned classical piano, with two of them going on to win competitions and one majoring in Music. Some other credits that AG would like to give Jhee: The first has to do with her extended family. Shortly after she arrived to the States, she became the willing hostess to AG's mother, and also his five siblings and their families when AG ambitiously invited them all to come to live in the US. While AG was out supporting the family with earning income, Jhee ran the 'room and board" during the first months of 12 new immigrants coming to America. The second credit is her unwavering confidence in her immediate family, which has harvested certain honors amongst different family members many years later - including two who attended UC Berkeley, a Pastor, two PhDs, and an accomplished Actress.
Jae-hee is survived by her husband AG, four children, one daughter-in-law, one son-in-law and three grandchildren, Charles, George and his wife Iris Im, Chrys and Sue and her husband, Nathan Darrow as well as Phillip, Phoebe and Joseph. Jhee has three surviving sisters in Korea and a number of nieces and nephews in Korea and the USA.
Family and friends will be received on Monday, August 1, 2022 from 10:00 until 10:45 am at the James J. Dougherty Funeral Home, Inc., 2200 Trenton Road, Levittown, where her funeral service will be held at 10:45 am. Interment to follow in George Washington Memorial Park, Plymouth Meeting, PA.
