He was born at home on October 24, 1937 in Yeagertown, Pennsylvania to Harvey and Nora (Galvin). He is survived by his loving wife, Cecilia (Roy), his daughter, Pamela (Matt) McCormick, his son, Douglas Miller, his granddaughters, Madigan and Molly McGrath, his grandchildren of the heart, David and Kimberly Albanowski and his furry best friend, Frankie the cat.
Jack was a proud resident of Philadelphia and the surrounding area since he was a young child and graduated from Frankford High School in 1956. After high school, Jack attended the Charles Morris Price School (Temple Marketing) and had a long career in Advertising Sales and Sales Management, working at some of the most prestigious outfits such as the Bulletin, Wall Street Journal, Philadelphia Magazine, Channel 17 and WIBG radio station. He also served in the 111th Air National Guard for six years as a Photographer.
To say that Jack was an avid Philadelphia sports fan is an understatement. He loved the Phillies, but also cursed a lot when they did not have their “stuff” together. He enjoyed watching and rooting on the Eagles and often told stories of going to games at Connie Mack and Franklin Field with his father when he was younger.
Along with sports, throughout his life Jack enjoyed fishing, the Jersey Shore (especially Wildwood Crest and LBI), oysters, old movies (especially Casablanca), peanut butter, ice cream, Rod Stewart, black cherry water ice, dry martinis and good cigars on occasion. He was always up for a road trip, whether it was to tour colleges with a granddaughter, go on a Sunday drive to Lancaster or try out a new restaurant.
He was a devoted husband to his wife, Cecilia, and together, they invested most of their time in their grandchildren. They were often seen at dance recitals, basketball games, choral performances, plays, musicals, talent shows, award ceremonies, ultimate frisbee tournaments, field days, tennis matches, karate classes, and any other event that the kids were involved in.
Jack was a parishioner of the former Saint Joseph the Worker Church in Fallsington, Pennsylvania and later, Saint Frances Cabrini in Fairless Hills. He attended Catholic church regularly despite not converting to Catholicism in 2017. He also volunteered his time for years at St. Joe’s working at the annual carnival, weekly bingo, as a hall and parking lot monitor during the children’s PREP program.
A memorial gathering for John will be held on Tuesday, June 18, 2024 from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM at James J. Dougherty Funeral Home, 2200 Trenton Road, Levittown, Pennsylvania 19056. A Mass of Christian Burial will occur Wednesday, June 19, 2024 at 9:30 AM at St. Frances Cabrini, 325 S. Oxford Valley Road, Fairless Hills, PA 19030.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Jack's memory can be made to the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia at https://www.chop.edu/giving.
Those who loved him the most will miss his wit, smile and stories. He will be sorely missed, but we will keep the memories of him close to our heart and always remember that “You can’t always get what you want, but if you try sometime, you’ll find, you get what you need.”
