

South Paris - Arthur J. Baril, 95 formerly of 64 Foch Street, Lewiston, passed away Monday, December 19, 2011 at the Maine Veterans Home. He was born in Lewiston, December 10, 1916 son of the late Charles and Yvonne Boutin Baril. He was educated in Lewiston schools and began working for Gould-Scammon, Inc. a shoe counter manufacturer in Auburn in 1933. Arthur worked as a skiver there until 1945 and then enlisted in the Navy on April 23, 1945. He did his training at the Naval Training Center in Sampson, N.Y. and then served at the Naval Auxiliary Air Station, Waldron Field in Corpus Christi, Texas. Arthur became a Seaman 2nd. Class and was honorably discharged in Boston, Mass. October 17, 1945. When Arthur returned to Lewiston, he went back to work as a skiver at Gould-Scammon. He would retire from there after 40 years of service. Arthur married the love of his life, Rita Bisson in 1938. They made a home in Lewiston and together raised four children and were married 68 years before her passing in 2007. Arthur loved to work with wood - he loved to chop it, stack it and burn it in his wood stove. He planted many trees and was an avid vegetable gardener. He also enjoyed playing cards every Saturday night, eating beans and franks, rocking in his chair and reading. Arthur came to the Maine Veterans Home in March of 2009 and enjoyed teasing the staff. He was a member of Prince of Peace Parish at Holy Cross Church and the American Legion Post # 22. He is survived by a daughter, Diane Ross of La Palma, California; a son, Robert Baril and wife Joanne of Lewiston; 7 grandchildren, Brian and Gary Bulger, Jean-Pierre, Kirstie and Daniel Baril, Jeremy and Eric Goss; several great grandchildren; a sister, Yvette Rodrigue of Auburn. He was predeceased by his wife Rita, two children, Annette Bulger and Normand Baril, two sisters, Lucienne Frechette and Cecile Landry and a brother, Roland Baril. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Memorial Mass at Holy Cross Church, Friday at 9:00 AM. Committal St. Peter's Cemetery.
