Mary E. Durkin

Auburn – Mary Ellen Durkin 92, formerly of 42 Hogan Rd. Lewiston died Wednesday June 13, 2012 at Clover Manor with family by her side.Born in Bellina, Co Mayo, Ireland on June 5,1920, a daughter of Thomas & Mary Loftus Durkin. She was educated in Ireland.She lived in London during World War II, where she worked as a seamstress sewing parachutes for the war. Mary immigrated to the United States in 1948 and lived in Chicago for 33 years. She worked for AT&T Telephone Co. and was a lifetime member of the Pioneer's Association. She retired to Lewiston in 1982 with her sister, Bridget and brother-in-law Joseph Stankus, with whom she lived with until their deaths in 2008. She enjoyed dancing in her younger years, playing cards and Bingo,crossword puzzles, and spending time with family. Mary will be remembered for "doing things her own way." She is survived by her nieces and nephews, Roger & Maureen LaChapelle of Lewiston, Mike & Wendy Stankus of Beverly Farms MA, Brian & Denise Stankus of Burlington WI, 10 grand nieces and nephews 3 great grand nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, her sister Bridget, and six brothers and sisters in Ireland.The family wishes to thank the staff at Clover Assisted Living and Nursing Home for the kind and loving care they gave Mary.
