

Lewiston- Ralph A. "Spood" Goodwin Jr. MD, 91 of Auburn died Friday April 24, 2009 at CMMC. Born in Lewiston on November 8, 1917 the son of Ralph A. Goodwin Sr. MD and Helen Pulsifer. Spood graduated from ELHS in 1934, Bates College in 1938 and Tufts Medical School in 1942. Spood Married Edith E. Everett on January 9, 1943. He served as a Captain (Medic) in the US Army and served in WWII from 1943 to 1945. After returning from his tour of duty he practiced in Eastport before attending Northwestern University in Chicago where he specialized in Ophthalmology. He started his practice in Auburn in 1952 as an Ophthalmologist and Surgeon with Central Maine General Hospital. He dedicated 50 years to the community in his profession until his retirement in 2002. Spood married Jeanne Doyon in 2005, following the passing of his first wife Edith in 1989. Spood enjoyed his coffee club friends since 1952. He was an avid skier and one of the original Directors at Sugarloaf Mountain. He liked tennis and spent summers since 1920 on Orr's and Bailey Islands where he enjoyed sailing and boating on Casco Bay. Spood was an active member of the Kora Temple Shrine in his younger years. He is survived by his wife Jeanne and her children Rolande Allaire and her husband Paul of Lewiston, Linda Higgins and her husband Bob of Auburn and Dot Fraser and her husband Dick of Keene, NH, Jeanne's seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.His daughter Nancy Ramage and her husband Bill of Perry, his two sons, Gus Goodwin and his wife Polly of Portland and John Goodwin and his wife Cathy of Auburn, six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.He is also survived by his twin sisters Jeannette York of Orr's Island and Marguerite Anderson and her husband Dwight of Ann Arbor, Michigan.Besides his parents he was predeceased by his first wife Edith of 46 years and their oldest son Thomas Goodwin.The family would like to thank the compassionate nursing staff on the fourth floor of CMMC.
