Walter lived his whole life in Sabattus. He graduated from Edward Little High School in 1952. He served
in the U.S. Army from 1953 - 1955 in Korea. He worked as a supervisor for various construction
companies for 30 years building Churches, Hospitals and Schools throughout the State of Maine. He was
the Director of the Physical Plant at Bates College from 1980 until he retired in 1996.
Walter was also an active member in his Community. He was a member of the Webster Lodge 1641 as a
Mason, the Kora Shrine and the American Legion. He served on the Board of Trustees for the Sabattus
Sanitary District.
Walter enjoyed Lawn and Garden work, Travelling, Boating, Reading, a good Card Game and helping his
Children in any capacity including helping to build their homes.
Walter leaves behind his beloved wife, Joan MacVane Wood, his son Keith and daughter-in-law Florence
Wood of Sabattus, his daughter Karen and son-in-law James Griffin of Portland and Cliff Island, 4
grandchildren Jennifer Langlois and husband Dan, Justin Wood and wife Shelby all of Sabattus, Jessica
Griffin of Paducah, KY and Dylan Griffin of Portland and Cliff Island and 4 Great-Grandchildren Aubrey,
Logan, Kaleb and Sydney all of Sabattus. He also leaved behind his brother James Wood and his sisters
Ruth Wheeler, Judy Chateauvert, Julia Shnur and Joan Tancrel. He was predeceased by his parents
Frank and Iva Wood of Sabattus and his 2 brothers Frank Jr (Dike) and Bruce Wood.
The family would like to thank the staff in the ICU at CMMC for being so kind in allowing friends and
family to spend quality time together during Walter's final hours.
