Betsy was born February 25, 1948 in Raleigh, North Carolina, daughter of the late Evelyn Brown Gibson of Hemingway, South Carolina, and the late Elliott R. Gibson, of Elizabeth, West Virginia. Betsy grew up in Hemingway, South Carolina, and graduated from Hemingway High School in 1966. Betsy attended college at Winthrop University, where she was the senior class president. After graduating from Winthrop University in 1970 with a degree in Biology, Betsy worked doing medical research at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill for two and a half years. Betsy moved to Columbia, South Carolina, where she married John Algie Scarborough and had two children, Patricia and John Randall. After her children were old enough to attend school full-time, Betsy obtained a Master’s in Education from the University of South Carolina, and taught middle school science at Crayton Middle School in Columbia for 19 years. After retirement, Betsy volunteered at Prisma Health Baptist Hospital, where she made many lasting friends and served on the auxiliary board. She also enjoyed her two cats, Smoky and Bug, and was a lifelong rescuer of animals.
Betsy is survived by her daughter, Patricia; her son, John Randall and his wife, Melanie; her cousin, Claire Yarborough (Paul), who was more like a sister to her; her close friend, Robert Oliver; numerous cousins, nieces and nephews who she cherished, and her three grandchildren, Mason, Charlie, and Ryan, who were the light of her life.
The family would like to thank all of the nurses, doctors, and healthcare workers at Baptist Parkridge Hospital and Richland Hospital for their care and compassion, as well as Betsy’s numerous friends, co-volunteers, and neighbors for their friendship, care and support.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Prisma Health Midlands Foundation or PETSinc of Columbia.
