Charlotte T. Miller

LEXINGTON – Mrs. Charlotte Taylor Miller, age 91, peacefully entered into rest on April 21, 2017 in Lexington at The Columbia Presbyterian Community (Presbyterian Home) of South Carolina. Born on August 21, 1925 in Ridgeway, South Carolina, Charlotte was the daughter of the late Samuel A. and Jessie T. Taylor of Ridgeway.

In 1942, Charlotte moved to Columbia, attended Draughn’s Business School and worked at C&S Bank until she met Jesse C. (Jet) Miller of Laurens, South Carolina. Shortly after their marriage, they moved to Aiken and worked for the School District of Aiken County for 30 years. After 41 years of marriage, Jet passed away and surviving were Charlotte and her four children ― three daughters and one son.

From a young age, Charlotte was an active member in the church and, later in life, became a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Aiken, South Carolina. As a child, she went to Sunday school and church each week and sang duets with her brother Samuel (Sammy). After moving to The Columbia Presbyterian Community in 1999, she regularly participated in vespers on Sunday afternoon with her friends and family.

Charlotte dedicated her life to bettering the lives of those she met. She thoroughly enjoyed helping members of her family and those within her community; she truly touched everyone in her presence. Another passion of hers was working, as it allowed her to continue to help others and put a smile on the face of each person she met. She worked for 75 years in various roles, which included: C&S Bank, Southern Bell Telephone Company, the School District of Aiken County (30 years), J.B. White, High Hampton Inn and Country Club in Cashiers, North Carolina (14 years), the South Carolina State Museum and Caughman-Harman Funeral Home. In her own words, she expressed that working was “…another opportunity to meet people and interact with the outside world.”

Aside from working, her other hobbies included attending church, singing, playing the piano, cooking, decorating her room, shopping, sending special cards and gifts to her family each birthday and at Christmas, spending time with her friends, and — most importantly — her true love in life and devotion was to her husband, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Charlotte recollected on her life and graciously said, “God has given me so much that I can’t believe that I deserve so many blessings."

Charlotte was predeceased by her husband, Jesse C. Miller; brother, Samuel A. Taylor and sisters, Anne T. Cunningham and Jessica Rebecca Taylor. She is survived by her daughters, Mary Carol McDonald (Michael) of Columbia, South Carolina, Jeanne M. Denton (Rhett) of Chapin, South Carolina, Debbie M. Owens (Barry) of Chapel Hill, North Carolina and son, Charles F. Miller (Diane) of Aiken, South Carolina. In addition to her children, Charlotte is survived by her nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

A memorial service and reception to celebrate her life will be held for her friends and family at The Columbia Presbyterian Community in Lexington, South Carolina at 3:00 p.m. Tuesday, April 25, 2017.

Charlotte will always be remembered as a loving friend, sister, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother whose greatest passions were devotion to her family and helping others. She leaves us rich in memories that will last us lifetime.
