Doris Velma Allen

Doris Velma Allen, 76, died after a valiant fight with post-polio, Parkinson’s and a neck dystonia. Visitation will take place at Greenlawn Baptist Church on Garner’s Ferry Road across from the VA Hospital one hour before the service. The Remembrance service will be at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, February 25. Doris was born in Jefferson, Georgia. She was the daughter of William Hanson Allen and Velma Allen. She graduated from North Georgia College in Dahlonega, Georgia; studied later at Carver School of Missions and Social Work, Louisville, Kentucky; and at the University of South Carolina in Columbia.

Gifted by God with love for and dedication to teaching first graders 26 years, Doris taught most of her career at Annie Burnside School. Doris’ creativity was expressed in playing the uke, making child-size dolls, and manipulating a monkey arm puppet. Bird watching was Miss Allen’s passion.

She was a member of Greenlawn Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School. Needy children from abroad were sponsored by Doris for over thirty-five years.

Doris leaves one older sister, Shirley Phillips of Atlanta; a large family of nine nieces and nephews; and her dear friend and companion of 40 years, Marjorie Sanders. Her excellent caretakers, Angie Fullard, Amanda Green, Bettye Foggie, Patricia Thomas, Dorothy Zimmerman, Mary Goff, and Tony Brown all loved and cared for Doris. Her family and friends will miss her calmness and support, her wit and stability, and her spiritual depth.
