Born in Lexington, SC on July 30, 1931, she was the only child of Eli Earl Corley and Annie Mae Rikard Corley. As an only child, she longed for a big family and was lovingly survived by her children: Jo Ellen Scoggins Norris, Robert L Scoggins, Jr. and Ann Scoggins Cooper (Mark) and grandchildren: Jimmy Norris (MariLou), Jonathon Norris (Staci), Edward Ray Bell (Kristi), Russell Cooper (Jennifer), Brandon Scoggins (Hope), Cameron Scoggins, Staci Nicole Farland (Nick) and Nathan Tharpe (Katie). She is also survived by 12 great grandchildren. Also missing her is Max “Baby Doll”, her Chihuahua who was by her side and comforting her until the end.
She is predeceased by her parents; her husband of 69 years, Robert L Scoggins, Sr. and son-in-law, Edward L Norris.
For most of her career, Ella worked as an administrative assistant/bookkeeper in multiple businesses including the company owned by her and her husband. She always dreamed of being a nurse and when her children were older, she enrolled at Midlands Tech. While continuing to raise a family and maintain a full-time job, she went to classes at night and became a Licensed Practical Nurse and began a career in healthcare.
As her children were growing up, she was involved with the youth at Lexington Methodist Church, Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, and youth sports and followed the Lexington High School band to multiple competitions and football games.
In retirement, she continued her love of the medical field and became a volunteer at Lexington Medical Center earning her 1000-hour pin. She also became interested in local elections and worked the polls for all local, state and national elections. She continued both of these activities into her 80s.
She was dedicated to her family and was always there when there was a need. She was a caregiver to many through the years including her mother, her father-in-law, her brother-in-law and her husband and of course, her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. It was also not unusual for her and her husband to “adopt” others who had needs in the community.
She was a member of Lexington United Methodist Church.
The family would like to express their appreciation to Agape Hospice of Lexington for providing comfort and care to not only Ella but her loved ones as well.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, April 8, 2021 at Caughman-Harman Funeral Home, Lexington Chapel. The family will receive friends following the service at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Lexington Medical Center Foundation or Lexington United Methodist Church.
