IRMO – Eugene "Red" Weed, 85, passed away peacefully with family at his side on Thursday, June 1, 2017. Born April 25, 1932, he was the son of the late Dayus and Jessie Harmon Weed of Irmo. He was predeceased by his wife of 53 years, Donna Elaine Allen Weed. They are now together once again. Mr. Weed was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend to all who knew him. He will be greatly cherished by many.
Mr. Weed was a 1950 graduate of Irmo High School. After graduation, he served in the United States Navy. During his active service, he was assigned to tours in the Mediterranean on the destroyer, USS Steinaker. He continued his service in the US Navy Reserve until 1957. His love for his country continued throughout his life, and he was a proud member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8069, White Rock, for many years.
After Mr. Weed completed his active duty in the Navy, he returned home to his young bride and began his lifelong career in the grading and clearing industry. Through his employment with Cherokee Construction, Mr. and Mrs. Weed lived in many locations throughout the southeast, including Folly Beach, Travelers Rest, Warner Robins, Jacksonville, Myrtle Beach, Greenville and Charleston. These travels provided many fond memories that he loved to share with everyone. This was also when he developed his skills and love for running a bulldozer.
In 1972, Red co-founded Irmo Grading and Clearing and developed it into a successful and well respected business. Mr. Weed was well known for his hard work, dedication, honesty and integrity by everyone that had any association with Irmo Grading and Clearing. His love for his trade continued until his final days, as he last operated his bulldozer just weeks before his passing at the age of 85. He was never happier than when he was running his dozer.
Red was a lifelong member of Salem United Methodist Church. He served in many leadership roles for the church but, most notably, he served as Chairman of the Trustees Committee for over 40 years. He will be deeply missed by his Salem church family.
Red’s greatest joy in life was his six grandchildren. Granddaddy Red never missed a go kart race, dirt car race, football, baseball, or soccer game, band concert, dance or piano recital or any opportunity to support his grandchildren. His love for his family leaves a wonderful legacy to his grandchildren.
Mr. Weed leaves many family members to cherish his memory. His three children and spouses, Malinda Kay Bickley (Hal) of Chapin, SC, Gene Weed (Jennifer) of Irmo, SC and Cheryl Lundy (Paul) of Dacula, GA; his six grandchildren and spouses, Cliff Bickley (Brittany), Andrea Bickley Snelgrove (Mitchell), Brandon Weed, Aaron Weed, Morgan Lundy and Taylor Lundy; his two sisters, Inez Hyatt of Blythewood, SC and Barbara Ann Martindale (Jay) of Boise, ID, and many nieces and nephews. Mr. Weed was predeceased by his wife, Donna Elaine Weed and siblings, Reuben Weed, Marion Weed, Mitchell Weed, Johnny Weed, Agnes Weed Kimball and Geraldine Weed Stockton.
The funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, June 7, 2017, at Salem United Methodist Church, Ballentine, SC. Interment in the church cemetery will follow the service. Most especially, Kay, Gene and Cheryl would like to thank Jennifer Weed for all the love and care she has bestowed upon our father all the way to his final breath.
