LEXINGTON – Graveside services for Helen Mathias Vickers, age 92, will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 9, 2019 at St. Stephen’s Lutheran Church Cemetery. She may be viewed from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday at Caughman-Harman Funeral Home, Lexington Chapel.
She was the daughter of the late Miley Taylor Mathias and Andrew Jackson Mathias, Sr. Helen is survived by her daughter, Jill H. Vickers and grandson, Ryan Alexander Mills. She was predeceased by her husband, George E. Vickers and son, Drew Mathias Vickers; sisters and brothers (with spouses), A. J. and Judy Mathias, Sal and Cecil Elkins, Lib and Mayo Harmon, Bootsie and Leland Amick, Bordie and Betty Mathias and niece and husband, Marlene and I. C. Russell. She is also survived by nieces and nephews, Sylvia (Bob) Looney, Marilyn (Norman) Boyd, R. W. (Tonya) McCormick, Tommy (Nelta) Mathias, George Mathias, Tracy (Richard) Owen, Kim and Alon Cox and many great nieces and nephews.
Helen was a life-long resident of Lexington and graduated from Lexington High School as historian of her class. She attended Business College in Charlotte, NC, and worked for Esso Standard Oil (now Exxon) as a comptometer and key punch operator for 15 years. She was an assistant kindergarten teacher with Harriett Easler at Lexington Elementary School for 19 years, and she loved it dearly. She belonged to a former ladies group that she talked about constantly!! Helen was a member of St. Stephen’s Lutheran Church and taught Weekday Church School for ten years.
Memorials, in lieu of flowers, may be made to St. Stephen’s Lutheran Church Debt Retirement Fund.
