

LEXINGTON – Funeral service for John Manning Hook, Jr., 88, will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, January 18, 2016 at St. Stephen’s Lutheran Church. The family will receive friends on Sunday, January 17, 2016 from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. at Caughman-Harman Funeral Home, Lexington Chapel. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Stephen’s Lutheran Church.
John Manning Hook, Jr. son of John Manning Hook and Ruby Hendrix Hook. He was born in West Columbia, SC on March 7, 1927. He served in the Navy during World War II and was stationed in Hawaii. Following his military service, he graduated from the University of South Carolina and remained a loyal Gamecock fan throughout his life.
On September 1, 1951, John married Ruth Smith of Columbia, and together they made their way to Greenville, SC, their home for forty years. He began a long career with Van Lott, Inc. in heavy road machinery sales and was a charter member of Our Savior Lutheran Church in Greenville where he held many positions and made many lifelong friends. He was an active member of Lions International and was a Shriner.
After retirement, he and his wife moved to Lake Murray where he enjoyed being closer to his large family. They were members of St. Stephen’s Lutheran Church. He loved hunting and enjoyed being a part of Little River Hunting Club where he spent many hours with his close friends and nephews.
John was predeceased by his wife, of 61 years, his daughter, Paula Hook Sloan and brother, Edwin Hook. He is survived by his daughter, Patricia Hook Thain (Tom) of Lexington and Thomas Manning Hook of Florida; grandchildren, Shelby Sloan Earnst (Brad), Hanna Sloan Estill (John), Courtney Thain Molony (Ryan), Cameron Thain Anderson (Jonathan) and Elizabeth Hook and nine great-grandchildren; sisters, Elizabeth Hook Caughman (Raymond), Jeanette Hook Carter (Fred), Frances Hook Drafts (George), Sue Hook Drafts (Albert), Kay Hook Black (Gary), June Hook Kaigler (Bobby) and numerous nieces and nephews.
His loyalty to his family and fun-loving personality will be missed by all who knew him.
