

PELION – On Monday, June 3, 2013, at age, 92, the Lord welcomed Mary Boyd Fogle into his presence. The gates of heaven opened wide to receive a good and faithful servant. Mary was born on January 26, 1921 in Williston, SC and spent her childhood years in Wagener, SC. Mary was married to Walter Green Fogle of Pelion, SC where they made their home for 65 years.
As we who are left behind celebrate her long and extraordinary life, Mary is celebrating in her heavenly home with pre-deceased family members - her beloved husband, Walter Greer Fogle; parents, Bailey Boyd Sr. and Ethel Givens Boyd; brothers, Charles Boyd and Bailey Boyd, Jr.; sisters, Peggy Boyd Gunter and Sylvia Boyd Mitchell. Surviving are sisters, Kathy Boyd Gardner of Panama City, FL and Wilsie Boyd Sullivan of Birmingham, AL and many nieces and nephews.
Mary was a faithful member of Pelion United Methodist Church and was active in civic and community services in the Pelion community. She was a 76 year member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Wagener Chapter # 38, where she served in many capacities including the office of Worthy Grand Matron of SC in 1953 – 1954. During her year as Worthy Grand Matron, Mary established the Order of the Eastern Star Estarl Religious Education Leadership Program in SC. She also served as Worthy Grand Ruth and as Ambassador to the Phillippines in 1988 – 1991.
During her life, Mary didn’t just exist rather she lived life to the fullest and squeezed every ounce of joy from it. In her professional career, she was employed in various branches of the US Government and retired in 1977 from the Third Army as Director of Civilian Personnel. During her tenure at Fort Jackson, and until her death, Mary expressed a deep love, appreciation and admiration for the men and women who serve and sacrifice for our country and for our freedoms. After retirement, she formed her own travel club, Escorted Travel Adventures and escorted hundreds of Travelers throughout the USA and Canada. Her ultimate desire was to share with others her love, appreciation and beauty of these two countries.
Her zest, love of life and her generosity of time and resources will long be remembered by all who knew and loved her. “Well done thou good and faithful servant. Enter now into the joy of the Lord.”
A Celebration of Mary’s Life will be held at 3:00 p.m. Thursday, June 6, 2013 at Pelion United Methodist Church, 810 Magnolia Street, Pelion, SC. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Graveside services will follow in the Oaklawn Cemetery.
The family wishes to express heartfelt appreciation to the staff of Oakleaf Village of Lexington for their care, concern and compassion during the past five years. Oakleaf Village became her “Home Away From Home” where, as she always said – I am “Happy and Safe”.
