
LEXINGTON – On Monday, October 3, 2011, Maureen Johnson Macaulay, 91, of Lexington, SC joined the angels triumphant. Maureen was born in Florence, SC on August 11, 1920. She was the daughter of the late Joseph Cantey Johnson and Ida Watts Johnson both of Horry County. She was a graduate of Florence High School and attended Winthrop College. She was State Math Champion in 1937. Mrs. Macaulay leaves behind a life devoted to her family and friends.
Mrs. Macaulay was the wife of the late Joe Frank Macaulay of Lexington, SC and has three children, Frank Macaulay, Jr. of Lexington, SC, Wil lou Gray Macaulay of Isle of Palms, SC and Earl Macaulay of West Columbia, SC. She has four loving grandchildren who adored her, William Firmender of Isle of Palms, Earl Macaulay, Jr., of West Columbia, Laura Jean Macaulay of Durham, NC and Jackson Macaulay of West Columbia.
Maureen had many accomplishments in her long life; she was a longtime active member of Lexington United Methodist Church, where she was a member of the Agnes Rogers Circle, served as a church teller and taught many Sunday School Classes. She donated her time and efforts to LICS and was a Cub Scout leader for Pack 308. In 1973 she was elected as the first woman to serve on the Town Council of Lexington. She later served as the Town Clerk and again served on Town Council in retirement. She truly loved the town of Lexington and was a faithful servant for many years. She participated in the Lexington County Democratic Women. She was also an active member of the Lexington Players, the Sweet Adelines and The Lexington Historical Society and friends of the Lexington Library. She enjoyed her book and bridge clubs as well.
A Celebration of her life with family and friends will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Thursday, October 6, 2011 at Caughman-Harman Funeral Home, Lexington Chapel. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, October 7, 2011 at Lexington United Methodist Church with burial to follow in Lexington Memorial Cemetery.
