Merle served in the US Army during the Korean War. He was retired from the US Post Office and a longtime member of Columbia First Seventh Day Adventist Church.
Surviving are his wife of 70 years, Libby Williams Clevenger; children, Beverly (Randy) Boltin of Lilburn, GA, Gary D. (Lisa) Clevenger of Gilbert; two grandchildren, Aaron Clevenger and Hannah Clevenger. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brother, Harry and two sisters, Dorah and Grace.

A celebration of life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, December 18, 2022 at Woodridge Memorial Park, 138 Corley Mill Road, Lexington, SC 29072.
