Shirley J. Griffin, of Leesville, SC, went home to Heaven peacefully in her sleep on September 16, 2022 after a lengthy and tough recovery from pneumonia. She was 79 years old. Her family was blessed to spend time with her for the last 7 months helping her fight the lung injury sustained. She’d often smile remembering stories of her family trips with Ray and her girls.
Louise Peacock Jackson and Thomas Benjamin Jackson were the proud parents of their fifth child, Shirley J. Jackson, born on July 12, 1943 in Bishopville, SC. Shirley was a hard-working wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister and friend to many. She was shaped by her childhood experiences including picking cotton and her family not having much money or fine clothes.
Over almost 8 decades of life well lived, Shirley enjoyed dressing up for church, cooking holiday meals, decorating, traveling, dancing and collecting clothing and jewelry. She mastered the art of shopping and never ran out of beautiful clothes and jewelry in her adult life.
Shirley and Ray were married in 1959 and gave birth to two daughters, Jackie and Christi. Shirley is survived by her husband, Ray Griffin; daughters, Jackie Burke and Christi Burriss (Tommy); grandchildren, Amanda O’Kelly, Taylor Burriss and Abbi Peters (Cameron) and great grandchild, Salem Jane Peters. She is also survived by her sisters, Linda Driggers (Ronnie) and Pat Jackson, numerous nieces and nephews and their families.
Shirley is predeceased by her parents and several siblings: Florrie Chandler, Mary Bateman, Thomas Jackson, Robert Jackson, Gino Strickland, Tammy Ward, Richard Jackson and Johnny Jackson.
Funeral service is planned for Tuesday, September 20, 2022 at noon with visitation at 11:00 am at Rock Family Worship Center, 5041 Platt Springs Road, Lexington, SC. Private burial at Fort Jackson National Cemetery afterward.
The family wishes to thank God for Shirley being in their lives for 79 years and her strong faith in Jesus, our Lord and Savior. We also thank her friends and family for the visits, calls and mostly their prayers during her illness and our loss.
We send love to all of you, Ray and family
