William A. Donaldson of West Columbia, SC passed away January 26, 2018. He was born in Newark, NJ in 1924 to William and Mary Donaldson from Scotland. He believed in “the American Dream” that one could find opportunities for achievement and building security for oneself and family through education, hard work and thrift. He graduated from Irvington High School and earned advanced degrees in engineering from Cornell University and the Stevens Institute of Technology. He served as an officer in the US Navy in World War II and the Korean War. His lifelong career in the electrical manufacturing industry began with Westinghouse in New York City and then with I-T-E Circuit Breaker Company in Philadelphia and Chalfont, PA. Subsequent professional positions included President of Terac Controls Inc in Tulsa, OK; General Manager for a Gould-Brown Boveri circuit breaker plant in Downey, CA; and Regional Manager for Brown Boveri Electric in Columbia, SC. He played a key role in forming, and leading as President, the Piedmont Dielectrics Company in Woodruff, SC. He was devoted to his family, especially his wife Jane, and is survived by her and their children Glenn, Dayl and William (Pamela), and grandchildren Scott (Lisa) and James. The family wishes to express their appreciation to the staff of the Presbyterian Community of Columbia, SC for their kind and devoted services during the past year. A private memorial service will be scheduled at a later date. Memorials may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
