Joseph William Everts, 78, of Kansas City, MO, passed away on December 29, 2020. He was born in Philadelphia on September 4, 1942 to William and Bertha (Susko) Everts. He grew up in North Philly, where he graduated from St. Edward’s grade school and Northeast Catholic High School for Boys, and attended St. Joe University.
He initially worked for INA where he met his future wife, Judith Kelleher. They were married on February 5, 1964. They moved to Marlton, NJ where they raised their two children, Amie and Matthew, and made many lifelong friends. Joe and Judy’s home was filled with love and laughter and was a gathering place for friends and family from all over. After their children grew up and began families of their own, Joe and Judy relocated to Kansas City to be closer to their children and grandchildren, who were their pride and joy. After Judy passed away in 2010, Joe faithfully kept up the tradition of sending a birthday card to all his nieces, nephews, and young grandnieces and grandnephews on time, every year, without fail. He was known to them as “Unk Hunk,” a moniker he surely chose for himself.
Joe was an avid fisherman and knew all the best fishing holes wherever he lived. In his youth, he loved to fish the inlets and back bays of the Jersey Shore and in his later years his favorite spots in Kansas City. He loved music (especially jazz), trips to the casino, and was a dedicated sports fan - especially of his hometown Philadelphia teams and Notre Dame football. He traveled all over, making frequent trips with his family to the Pacific Northwest, Yellowstone, Vermont, Las Vegas, and, holding a special place in his heart, Disney World. But most of all, Joe relished being a proud parent and grandparent: from cheering on the sidelines at Cherokee High School in Marlton, where his children were standout athletes, to taking his grandchildren on many vacations. He will forever be remembered for his story telling, sense of humor, big grin, and his strong, supportive love.
Joe is survived by his children, who miss him dearly: his daughter, Amie Everts Tamburelli (Michael), of Kansas City, MO and his son, Matthew (Kristina) of Liberty Lake, WA, and by his beloved grandchildren: Luke and Natalie Tamburelli and Ainslee and Breana Everts. He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Judy; his parents, Bill and Bertha Everts; his parents-in-law, Ed and Katherine Kelleher, and his brother, Bill. He is greatly missed by his extended family from Vermont to New Jersey, Philadelphia to Spokane, and Kansas City.
There will be services at a later date in the Summer. In the meantime, put on a John Pizzarelli album, cheer, cheer for old Notre Dame, take a look at some old photos, and have a toast to Joe.
