

Dorothy was a gifted educator. She touched many lives throughout her career, teaching science at Elon, Smith, Altamahaw-Ossipee, and Western Middle School, serving as an Assistant Principal at Southern Middle School, and ending her formal teaching career as Principal at Graham Middle School. She was very active in her church throughout her life including serving in the WMU, singing in the choir, and teaching adult Sunday School classes at Mt. Zion Baptist Church and Pleasant Hill Christian Church.
After retirement Dorothy remained active in her community as a Master Gardner, Election Judge, and Scholarship Committee member for the ACCA. Her most cherished role was that of wife, mother, and grandmother. She spent countless hours caring for her family, both young and old.
Dorothy was known for her kindness, generosity and leadership abilities. She was cherished by her family and friends and will be greatly missed.
She was the daughter of the late George and Lois Coble Spoon and was preceded in death by her sister, Emily Sue Spoon.
Dorothy is survived by her husband of nearly 61 years, H. Wayne Humble of the home; son, Jeffrey Humble and his wife, Crystal of Snow Camp, NC; grandsons and source of her greatest joy, Clayton Humble and Spencer Humble of Snow Camp, NC; brother, Donald Spoon and his wife, Vivian of Mesa, AZ; and sister, Rena Ward and her husband, William of Liberty, NC, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends for a time of visitation on Friday evening, June 14, 2024 from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. at Mt. Zion Baptist Church, 3572 W. Greensboro-Chapel Hill Road, Liberty, NC. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, June 15, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. at Mt. Zion Baptist Church with Rev. Andy Clapp officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
At the family's request, in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Mt. Zion Baptist Church Cemetery Fund., PO Box 280, Alamance, NC 27201.
The family would like to thank the Amedisys Hospice team who provided care during her last months, as well as Nancy Cheek, Ellen Hill and Rickie Johnson who graciously sat with Dorothy on many occasions.
