Honoring our friend, Jim Mcgowan
While visiting Jim last week, Jim’s youngest daughter Shannon said, “You know, he was just a really good guy”. I think that is a perfect description of him and aptly sums up a special husband, father, grandfather and friend.
Jim was a success. He was successful in the car business in New York. He was successful in somehow managing to convince Joann (JoJo) to marry him. He was successful when he moved to Florida and started in the car business again and at the same time became an award winning UHaul dealer. He just seemed to have a knack.
Then, using his vision for the future, he and Jojo started Good Sounds. A company that worked to provide top of the line sound systems and services, a company that today, many years later is being successfully carried on by his family still leading the way with top of the line products and services.
When I first read Jim’s obituary, I was struck by his initials: J, E, M. It reminded me of the word gem, something that Jim was to so many of us. When someone says “you're a gem” they usually mean that you are special or unique in some way or that you've done something special or unexpected. A gemstone is both unique and valuable. So it seemed like Jim’s initials were applicable.
 
I was thinking about the many great times that Paula and I had with Jimmy and JoJo. Times were easy with them, loud (sorry JoJo) but easy. I am reminded of the day that the four of us were going to Margaritaville in Hollywood and there were no parking spaces. We drove around for over an hour looking for one, just laughing and enjoying each other’s company.
 
Jimmy loved racing cars and teaching others to race. Jim invited me to Homestead to ride with him one day. It was pretty funny when our first two runs resulted in getting red flagged, definitely not a good thing. He had an amazing capacity to befriend all kinds of people. He became close friends with Ken, who owned the famed Weenie Wagon.
 
As Shannon said, Jim was just a really good guy. We will miss him.

I know you had been very concerned about the toll his illness was taking on him.  I’ve got to believe he is now pain free and will be keeping a free watchful eye over you and your children until you are together again.
