Cheryl fought a two-year battle with AML (Leukemia) and was fortunate in that she was able to pass in her own home in comfort and in peace surrounded by her family.
Cheryl was preceded in death by her parents, William (Bill) Barrera and Mary Louise Barrera.
Cheryl is survived by her husband, of 62 years, Dan, their son, David Karleskint, daughter, Elizabeth Leonard, son-in-law, Richard Leonard, and her granddaughter, Quincy Leonard. Also, surviving family members are her brother, Stephen Barrera of Idaho, her sister-in-law Elizabeth Karleskint of Lincoln, and her cousin Mike Barrera of Los Angeles.
Cheryl was born in Bakersfield, California, and spent her first 18 years there until she married Dan and moved to Santa Maria. Cheryl was the ultimate consummate wife, mother, and homemaker. Her life literally revolved around her family. She did everything to make sure that they had the best life that they could.
After her kids grew up and did not require full-time managing, Cheryl went to work for Evergreen Valley College in the San Jose, where she supported the business development department with an emphasis on the computer sciences.
It was during this time that Cheryl was diagnosed with breast cancer. She took the full chemotherapy radiation treatment and was declared in recession and stayed such through the rest of her life.
With Cheryl retired, the family moved to Lincoln Sun City. Cheryl got involved in multiple support groups within the community. And, in fact, was one of the founders of the Bosom Buddies breast cancer support group that has been active for 22 years now.
The funeral service will be on March 20th and be a private family only service. We, however, do plan a celebration of Life in the late spring or early summer and will keep everyone notified. Cheryl requested that in lieu of flowers that people make a charitable contribution to Friends of the Lincoln Library (FOLL) or The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society or the Placer County Breast Cancer Foundation.
