Donald "Don" Eugene Pohlmann, 95, died March 25, 2026. Born October 12, 1930, in Harvard, Nebraska, Donald was the son of Otto and Elsie (Vorderstrasse) Pohlmann. The family lived in Deshler, Nebraska. As an infant, it was detected that Don had issues with his eyesight, and he went on to attend the Nebraska City School for the Blind, graduating in 1948. While there, he received training as a piano tuner which started his life-long career where he was known as hard-working and dedicated to his craft.
Don tuned pianos for nearly 60 years, always proud to say he was his own boss. He tuned and repaired pianos for individuals throughout South Central Nebraska as well as many schools, including Hastings Public Schools, Hastings College, and Concordia College in Seward, Nebraska. His skill also reached beyond the ordinary, as he tuned pianos for celebrity performers, including Guy Lombardo and Ronnie Milsap. After retiring in 2006, Don and Vivian moved to Lincoln, Nebraska, to be closer to family and to help babysit his grandchildren.
Don met his future bride, Vivian Steinbrenner, in 1965 and became acquainted by corresponding through open reel. Vivan liked the sound of his voice. True to his principled nature, Don would not marry Vivian until she had her degree. They married in New Lenox, Illinois, in 1967, and together made their home in Hastings, Nebraska, where they raised their two boys.
He enjoyed attending his boys' school activities. Don was also a devoted fan of the University of Nebraska basketball and football teams from back when they were still the Bugeaters.
In faith and service, Don was steadfast. While a Hastings resident, he was a member of Peace Lutheran Church where he served as Sunday School Superintendent and taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School. When he and Vivian moved to Lincoln, they became members of Redeemer Lutheran Church. His life reflected an enduring commitment to his church community.
Don was sociable and never met a stranger, yet he did not draw attention to himself. With characteristic humility and good humor, and because he was born in Harvard, he would say he was “a Harvard man.” In the words he would want remembered most: Don would often say, "God is real," "Jesus is alive," and "the Bible is true.”
Don was preceded in death by his parents; sisters and brothers-in-law Lola (Ernie) Peck and Galen Eberhardt. He is survived by his bride, Vivian; sons Roger and Larry (Joy) Pohlmann, all of Lincoln, Nebraska; grandchildren Rhys and Addison Pohlman; sister Jo Ann Eberhardt, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and countless friends.
