Everett was the second of three sons of Henry Harms Miller and Elizabeth Alice Schilling. He attended Saratoga Elementary School and Irving Junior High School. He graduated from Lincoln High School in 1936. He then studied business administration at the Lincoln School of Commerce, graduating in 1938. In 1941 he joined the US Army. He served in the Headquarters of the 204th Field Artillery Battalion in Europe. In 1945 he was honorably discharged.
Upon his return he worked in the publications section of the Veterans Administration. From there he worked at the US Post Office for 30 years until he retired. On September 29, 1946 he married Phoebe Novella Small from Oketo, KS. Phoebe was the daughter of Walter and Grace Small. They had two sons and their marriage lasted until May 5, 1982, when Phoebe died unexpectedly. In 1988 he met Rose Marie Schlegel. They continued their close companionship until his death.
