Greg grew up in the Great Northwest; he lived in Oregon, Montana, and Washington State. Greg graduated from Eastern Washington University in 1979. After college, he went to work for KMart in Colorado, where he meet his bride, Cindy. Greg and Cindy dated for 6 weeks before getting engaged. Cindy “popped the question” and they got married 6 months later at a courthouse in Texas followed by two hot dogs and went back to work. They would live in Texas for 21 years. Greg changed jobs after KMart and began working for Air-Dreco/SunSource until he retired in 2023. While in Texas, Greg and Cindy raised their two girls, Taryn and Brittani. Once the girls were older, Greg and Cindy would move to a suburb of Denver, Colorado where they would live for seven years before finally settling down in Lincoln, Nebraska in 2021.
Greg had many passions. He loved all things outdoors; mountains, traveling to Colorado to enjoy their cabin, hiking, golf, and taking daily walks. He loved his family more than anything. His grandkids were the light of his life and his reason. He loved attending their sporting events, throwing the ball around, and providing endless amounts of ice cream treats and popsicles. Greg loved sitting outside smoking a cigar and listening to sports on the radio. Greg also loved exploring new breweries, hiking fourteeners, keeping his grass looking nice, and following many sports teams such as the Denver Nuggets, the Dallas Mavericks, pro tennis, pro golf, and the Huskers.
Greg was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2023. Greg approached this diagnosis with Fight and Determination. He had a positive attitude throughout chemo, always saying “he’d kick this thing”. After 12 rounds of chemo, he was able to have surgery to remove the tumor. He handled surgery and recovery well and started to resume some pre-cancer hobbies. He recently developed a bump in the road during a routine scan, where doctors found cancer in his lung. He took this with stride and had another positive attitude towards this news. Over the summer, Greg and Cindy were able to go on a 2.5 week road trip to the Northeast. Greg ate numerous lobster rolls and visited many places on his bucket list such as Fenway Park and was able to run the steps of the Philadelphia Museum of Art (the stairs from the movie, Rocky). He loved it all and was ready to travel again.
He was preceded in death by his parents; mother-in-law, Frances; and his well-loved dogs. Greg is survived by his loving wife, Cindy; two daughters, Taryn (Nic) Gronemeyer and Brittani (Brett) Herbek; seven grandchildren, Hattie, Lola, Asher, Theo, Brighton, Tate, and Griffin; brother, Dan (Maria) Obenchain; and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service in Greg's honor will be held at their home in Lincoln, Nebraska at 2:00 PM on Sunday, October 6, 2024.
