Marlin Callaway passed away on January 3, 2022, with his family by his side. Marlin was born on September 24, 1935, in Unadilla Nebraska, to Raymond and Rosa (Helm) Callaway. Marlin graduated high school on May 20, 1953. After high school he worked for the soil conservation service in Syracuse, Nebraska, until he enlisted in the Navy in 1956. He served in the Navy from 1956-1958 on an aircraft carrier (USS Hancock). Marlin worked under the flight deck in the catapult room where he would launch planes off the ship. He had many stories of his time in the Navy, he enjoyed seeing the world. When Marlin was discharged from the Navy, he went to work for the USDA soil conservation service and remained there from 1958 until he retired in 1996. After he retired, he went to work part time for Osco Drug/CVS for 12 years. In the summer he would work in the lawn and garden center. When the garden season was over, he would work in the store stocking shelves and delivering prescriptions for the pharmacy. He went on to work for Hy-Vee on 50th and “O” Street as a courtesy clerk for another 10.5 years. Marlin and Shirley were married on 11/18/1959, they were married for 62 years. Marlin and Shirley are members of First Baptist Church on “K” street in Lincoln, Nebraska. They had 2 children, Kimberley and Bradley. Marlin had many hobbies, some of which included hunting, fishing and gardening. Marlin took great pride in his gardens. At their home in Bennet, Nebraska, he had a large vegetable garden. He always had more vegetables than he knew what to do with, so he would pick a truck load of vegetables and haul them up to Lincoln in the back of his old 1971 Chevy pickup. He would set up a stand in the corner of a parking lot at the intersection of 48th and Van Dorn Street and sell his load of vegetables. They moved to Lincoln in 1997 where he kept a garden (on a much smaller scale). Marlin had a garden of some sort every summer through the summer of 2021. At their townhome Marlin always had their front walkway and porch lined with bright colorful flowers. Marlin loved to can his vegetables with Shirley, they would can dozens of jars of tomatoes and beets. He would make his stone jar dill pickles that were a favorite among his family. Marlin was a quiet man (until you got to know him), but when he spoke people listened. He was very quick witted. Marlin loved his family and was always there when we needed help.
Marlin is survived by his wife Shirley; daughter Kim (Dan) Nelson of Lake Stevens, Washington; son Brad (Laura) Callaway of Lincoln, Nebraska; grandsons Garrett Nelson and Blake Nelson (sons of Kim and Dan Nelson); granddaughters Aspyn Callaway and Avalyn Callaway (daughters of Brad and Laura Callaway); sisters Darline Thoms, Shirley (James) Hall, Faye (Thomas) Amerson; brother Robert (Judy) Callaway; brother-in-law Jerry Thoms; sister-in-law Katheryn Callaway and numerous nieces and nephews.
