

LTC Ross V. Winters (ret), 84, of Lincoln, NE, died June 26, 2015 after a long courageous battle with lung cancer. He was born in Long Beach, CA, on November 2, 1930, to Jesse and Evelyn Winters. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Robert Winters, and step-daughter, Michele Wehling. He is survived by his wife, Yvonne Winters, brothers Richard Winters and Gene Winters, and sisters Mary Potter and Janet Grayson. Children, Mike and (Angie) Winters, Tammy and (Jerry) Seffran, Robert and (Jean) Winters Step-children, Sheri and (Brian) Boyd, John and (Tammie) Nottestad, and Bill Wehling, son-in-law. as well as 12 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. LTC Winters enlisted in the NE Army National Guard as a Private on March 11, 1947. During his military career he progressed in rank to Master Sergeant before receiving a direct appointment to Second Lieutenant on June 27, 1967. He completed the Infantry Officers Basic & Career Courses and Command & General Staff College. While assigned with the 1-134th Infantry Battalion LTC Winters served in several areas including Headquarters Company Commander, Battalion Executive Officer, and Assistant Director of Plans, Operations, and Training. He was instrumental in the success of the Marksmanship Program for the NE ARNG. He retired in 1985 after over 38 years of service. LTC Winters was a member of the American Legion, NE Military Retirement Council, and the Military Officers Association of America. He was a member of St Peter’s Catholic Church in Lincoln. His favorite pastime was fishing and he often spent weeks in the summer at a favorite lake in Minnesota. He was also handy with tools, putting together patio decks, arbors, and sheds, as well as building doll houses for his granddaughters and an army fort for his grandson. He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be Wednesday July 1, 2015 at 10:30 AM at St. Peter’s Catholic Church (4500 Duxhall Drive) in Lincoln. Visitation will be Tuesday from 6 until 8 PM with a 7 PM Rosary at Lincoln Memorial Funeral Home (6800 S. 14th St.). Memorials may be directed to the family for future designation.
