He graduated from Wadena High School and earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Minnesota Duluth. He went on to receive both his Master’s and Ph.D. in English from the University of Maryland, where he met his wife, Janet Shell.
Stanley worked as an editor for the Soil Survey Conservation Service from the early 1970s until his retirement in 2011. He and Janet made their home in Lincoln, raising three children together.
He was preceded in death by his wife Janet and his eldest son Robert, both in 2021. He is survived by his sons and Michael, Joseph (Shari), his son-in-law Robin, and his grandchildren Charlotte and William.
Memorial Service at 2:00 pm on Thursday, September 4, 2025 at Lincoln Memorial Funeral Home 6800 South 14th Street. Inurnment will be held in Lincoln Memorial Park Cemetery.
