1938 - 2021
Durham-Gene L. Brown 83, a lifetime resident of Durham, died on November 17, surrounded by his family. He was born on September 2, 1938, the youngest son of the late Joseph and Charity Brown. He graduated from Lisbon High School class of 1957, and attended The University of Maine Portland.
Gene married Barbara Bulick, of Lisbon Falls on June 30, 1959. He worked for Dealer Supply Co. of Springfield Mass, and then Taylor Tool CO. of Attleboro, Mass. He worked for 30 years for Lord Real Estate in Lisbon Falls, upon his retirement.
At 41 he served on Durham board of selectman; School Committee and chairman of Durham Republican Committee for over 15 years. At 51 he was appointed by the governor, a three year term to the state Inland Fisheries & Wildlife Advisory Council representing Androscoggin; Kennebec and Sagadahoc Counties. He served on Maine Guides Licensing Board for one and a half years.
Gene was a registered Maine Guide for over 20 years. He taught as a Hunter Safety instructor for 8 years and has served for 3 years as a Boy Scout Leader. He also was a contestant on the show "So You Think You Know Maine" in the early 70's. He was a member of Shiloh Chapel for over 50 years and served 6 years on the Deacon's Board and Finance Committee.
Gene was known for his love of hunting; fly fishing; cribbage; and playing jokes. He was co-owner of Little Lyford Pond Camps in 1976, and fished at what he always called the "Secret Pond". Many memories with family and fishing buddies at both of these places. He bagged deer with rifles, handguns and shot guns. He still wanted a challenge and purchased a bow in 1983, and was rewarded with a four point buck. and enjoyed hunting with his nephew Jim. His last hunt was a 23 pound 12 ounce Turkey, sporting a 9 5/8 inch beard.
Gene was always ready for a cribbage game. He was a member of the Senior Citizens Cribbage League at the Multi Purpose Center in Lewiston where he won many tournaments, and also at the Marion T. Morse School in Lisbon Falls, where he met his friend Wilma.
He was a humble; caring; and a well loved man.
He is survived by his three daughters: Tammy Bosse of Durham, Jamie Brown of Topsham, and Vicky Brown of Hartford, six grandchildren: Lisa Bosse of Lisbon Falls, Adeena Levesque of Lisbon Falls, Chelsey Morton of Bowdoin, Daja Martin of Hebron, Dylan St.Amour of Topsham. and Shane St. Pierre of Hartford, three great grandchildren: Gavin Levesque, Greta Lundberg and Ellora Martin, a sister Winny Wallingford of Bingham and a sister in law Madelyn Bulick of Lisbon Falls. He was predeceased by his wife Barbara Brown of 47 blessed years and brothers Joseph and James Brown.
